The Deployment Strategist makes the problem actionable

The Deployment Strategist works with operators, managers, and sponsors to understand how work actually gets done. They map decisions, exceptions, and incentives; qualify use cases; and translate a broad ambition into a testable business hypothesis.

The role continues through delivery. As technical constraints become visible, the strategist helps adjust scope, clarify trade-offs, and prepare the organization to use the solution. A requirements document is not the final output.

The FDE makes the solution real

A Forward Deployed Engineer works close to users and their environment. They build thin prototypes, investigate data quality, integrate existing systems, and make technical feasibility observable. Production work includes access controls, evaluation, telemetry, and recovery paths.

This is not simply a developer assigned to a customer project. The engineer actively shapes the problem through evidence from working software and direct observation.

Use a shared discovery loop

Both roles should attend workflow sessions and review user tests. A strategist who never sees failures may overestimate value; an engineer who never sees the work may optimize the wrong task. Keep one backlog, one definition of success, and a common decision log.

The business owner remains essential. Neither role should silently assume authority over process policy, risk acceptance, or organizational change. Make those decisions explicit and owned.
